BASKETBALL OPERATIONS INTERN


DEPARTMENT: Basketball Operations

Assist the Houston Rockets Basketball Operations team in answering fundamental basketball questions using the best data sets in the game.  Questions are approached using a variety of mathematical and computational tools combined with basketball knowledge and intuition.  Premium is placed on actionable and timely analysis. Position is an excellent opportunity for those considering a career in the NBA, sports or data analysis. The position reports to the EVP of Basketball Operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
-Experience with varied programming languages, particularly SQL

-Experience with data analysis, statistics and/or econometrics and familiarity with commonly used statistics packages or programming languages.

-Background in mathematical or computational field are desirable but not required.

-Experience with large data sets is an advantage, as is experience with scripting languages.

-Availability to serve a one-year internship.

Arena Operations Intern - Memphis Grizzlies (Memphis, TN)

Position Purpose

The Intern is responsible for the operation and execution of miscellaneous duties for all events and functions.  This position will help coordinate, and ultimately manage assigned needs and requirements for all events at FedExForum, as well as events in the community.  The Intern will work with all departments within the Arena Operations department to help in the execution of events and develop their understanding and skills as a successful Arena Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide support within the Arena Operations Department for day-to-day operations and all event productions
  • Develop and create event documents to communicate with all arena departments regarding event operational needs and requirements
  • Help coordinate facility events and act as a liaison to facility users to provide information and assistance from conception to production
  • Develop and maintain post event summary and correspondence as required for all events
  • Ensure proper arena set up for all events, including conversions
  • Help coordinate with assigned departments their needs to fulfill requirements for Arena events and functions
  • Work closely with various arena departments to understand their role within the organization and Arena
  • Help manage/coordinate assigned Arena special projects
  • Help manage/coordinate assigned (various) departmental special projects
  • Develop and maintain post event summary and correspondence as required for all events

Required Skills, Experience & Abilities

Essential:

SBYD Fellow (Internship) - Memphis Grizzlies (Memphis, TN)

Position Purpose

The Memphis Grizzlies Foundation exists to foster conditions that lead to accelerated student achievement, ensuring that the rising generation is equipped with the skills needed to compete in the current and future economies. To that end, our mission is to find, fund, create, and connect best-in-class youth mentoring/development programs in the Mid-South region. Every student needs and deserves a network of positive adult role models dedicated to his/her success.

The SBYD Fellow is primarily responsible to advance the Foundation’s work in Sports Based Youth Development (SBYD). The successful candidate will work over the course of the one-year fellowship to develop a scalable solution to expand the SBYD framework in Memphis. Fellowship awards will be available for Coach training with Up2Us Sports as well as research opportunities with a best practice national organization. At the end of the program, the Fellow will deliver a strategic plan for the GrizzFIT Kids Bootcamp that details sustainable growth of the initiative across underserved communities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support all aspects of the GrizzFIT Kids Bootcamp program including (a) coach/volunteer recruitment and screening, (b) coach/volunteer training and orientation (c) curriculum development and implementation (d) student recruitment (e) ongoing expansion strategy (f) refining policies and procedures, and (g) data management and analysis

  • Refine and track metrics aligned to program outcomes: attendance, school performance and program participation through the online data management system

  • Manage and execute all event planning and/or coordination including training sessions, recruitment activities, recognition events, and other GrizzFIT Kids Bootcamp program requirements

  • Prepare and deliver orientation programs for school staff, parents, participants, etc.

  • Serve as “first responder”/ advisor/ resource for coach/mentor teams; facilitate weekly de-brief sessions and support ongoing communications with student participants

  • Participate in recruitment events and community presentations to build program awareness

  • Communicate with coach/mentors regularly to keep them informed about (a) schedules, events, and Bootcamp session plans (b) assessment and tracking (c) incentives

Intern, Promotions and Game Presentation - Memphis Grizzlies (Memphis, TN)

Position Purpose

 The Promotions and Game Presentation Intern is responsible for assisting with the coordination of Memphis Grizzlies Marketing and Promotions programs and initiatives; playing an active role in building awareness and excitement for the Memphis Grizzlies.  The Intern will assist in the development and implementation of all media promotions in support of Memphis Grizzlies ticket sales and marketing.  Additionally, the candidate will contribute to the development and management of all Grizzlies games and events with a goal of creating a unique, entertaining and fan-friendly event experience.      

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Promotions

  • Assist in the development of promotions with media partners that provide the Grizzlies with added media value/exposure to create excitement around the selected games/events, ultimately increasing the profile and positive association of the Grizzlies brand. 
  • Assist in implementing all necessary details before, during and after media promotion (i.e.: coordinate prizing, game night/event elements, contest rules and regulations, winner redemption, poster put-up and take-down, volunteer recruitment and coordination and other elements as required).
  • Assist in the development of media packages for on-air ticket giveaways in support of ticket sales for specific games and/or non-Grizzlies events.

  • Compile, enter, and organize data for contest participant registration.

  • Receive and reply to internal and external promotional inquiries on grizzlies.com

  • Fulfil collateral requests

  • Maintain Memphis Grizzlies collateral libraries

  • Assist with in-arena contests and special events

  • Serves as a member of the Grizzlies Street Team for community events.

Game Presentation/Operations

  • Assist in the development and coordination of all in-game elements including, but not limited to, talent bookings, acts for halftimes, in-arena promotions, pre and post game activities, anthems, mascot, dance team, game staff etc.

Brief Discription of the Internship

Overview of the Internship: Responsible for sorting, handling, and fulfillment of all incoming requests. Assist in the coordination and execution of all community affairs events & programs including, but not limited to NBA Cares, Holiday programs, Hispanic Heritage Month and Black History Month, HEAT Learn to Swim Program, HEAT Academy, HEAT Youth Basketball.  Responsible for scheduling and fulfillment of the Honorary Ball Kid Program at all HEAT games. Responsible for writing Community Affairs event recap pieces for HEAT.com. Duties also include general office duties such as: data entry, answering phones, copying, filing, faxing, and maintaining mailing lists and donation requests. Will perform other duties as required.

Must be enrolled in a college or university. Undergraduate Senior or Graduate Student preferred. Event planning and project management experience helpful. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to meet deadlines and balance multiple tasks.  MS Word, Excel and Outlook required.  Heavy lifting will be required at times. Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.Must be enrolled in school and able to work from June to June.

  • Assisting with box office will call - additional tickets and reprinting of game/event tickets
  • Planning and working all special events, including interaction with Suite clients  and Player’s Club Members

Key Responsibility Areas:
• Assist in the creation of Web art and imagery with experience using Photoshop

Qualifications:
• Third- or fourth-year college student or recent college graduate with focus in digital media, journalism, marketing, communications or related field

• Highly adept in Photoshop and designing Web art
• Experience creating, editing and posting videos online
• Working knowledge of the Sacramento Kings and NBA

Overview:  The Guest Services Intern will have the opportunity to see firsthand how a successful Guest Services department within a large, complex and diverse organization such as the Washington Wizards functions.   • Assist and support the Guest Services department with Service and Retention initiatives including special events, welcome packets and season ticket member benefit fulfillment for the upcoming season. This may include, but is not limited to:
    • Assist with event set up, coordination, and execution of member events and receptions
    • Track and maintain inventory of autographed/promotional items and season ticket member collateral materials
    • Learn and use Archtics ticketing system and SalesForce for reports, account set-up and updating season ticket member records

  • Assist Manager, Events & Programs with season ticket member events including setup, execution, breakdown and final recaps for all season ticket member events

Minimum Qualifications:            

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student in good academic standing and must earn college credit toward graduation and will be required to submit a credit verification letter from his or her college or university for the internship

Partnership Intern 

Tulsa Pro Hoops, host organization of the WNBA's Tulsa Shock, is currently recruiting Partnership Department interns, known as Partnership Interns, for the upcoming 2015 Fall semester. This internship offers the opportunity to work with a diverse group of experienced staff members in a fast-paced, challenging environment. We are looking for hard-working, organized, dedicated individuals with a team player attitude and the desire to proactively take on responsibility throughout the fall semester. 

Internship Information

The internship takes place in the Tulsa Shock office located in downtown Tulsa. Partnership Interns support various staff members in areas related to partnership partners, events and creative sales planning, and marketing. These interns support the partnership coordinator with partnership sales coordination, prospect research, keeping and updating prospecting lists, working on in-arena activations and set up, inventory tracking, website partnership promotion updates, photography and preparing partnership recap summaries.

Additionally, the fall semester internship includes but not limited to:

Customer Service – Interns interact with current partners, prospective customers, and sales staff by phone and in person. Excellent telephone communication skills are required. Interns are required to fulfill partnership activations and promotions during the season. At no time during the internship are interns expected to solicit sponsorship sales.

Intern Projects – Interns work on various team projects 15– 40 hours per week. Projects include corporate research, creating and maintaining corporate partner photo libraries, activation fulfillment set-up, set-up of partnership functions and needs at BOK Center, and other community activities during the fall. Also, interns will be taught how to create and assist with corporate sponsorship PowerPoint proposals.

This is a part-time (15-40 hours per week) unpaid internship for college credit. Fall internships begin August 2015 and end December 2015. Interns are required to live in the Tulsa area for the duration of the internship or able to commute to the Tulsa office in a timely manner. Current college students in their freshman to senior years and recent college graduates may apply. Current college students chosen for the internship program may use the internship to receive college credit hours, if the college allows.

Characteristics of Ideal Candidates
Candidates should be detail-oriented, able to handle multiple projects, able to prioritize their time and be comfortable working in a fast-paced team environment. Experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel and strong organizational skills are a must. Excellent oral and written communication skills are important due to the significant number of phone calls and questions interns are required to handle. Knowledge about the game of basketball is not required.
