Technical Services: Computer Information Systems
Chief Information Officer - Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club (Atlanta, GA)

The Atlanta Hawks & Philips Arena intend to be a data-driven company – collecting, analyzing and tracking information to make the best decisions about our business.  To this end, we are creating an organizational structure that consolidates the individual domains of IT, data, finance and strategy under a single umbrella with the resources and capabilities to lead this change.  For this to be successful, we will have a single point of ownership across the technology platform – from the hardware through the back-end software to the consumer-facing applications – combined with ownership of the collection and analysis of financial and operational data to deliver.

This newly created position will be senior business leader of three/four current departments across the organization and will be responsible for leading, developing, and building the capabilities for these groups – Data & Financial Systems,  Applications (Software), and  Network & Infrastructure Management (Hardware). This position will also be responsible for owning the organizational technology stack and developing the technology/digital strategy across the team, arena and future development.  In addition, this role with actively participate in corporate sponsor and business development planning and execution for technology needs.

Data & Financial Systems

Like many companies, the Hawks are adapting to the many ways that technology is improving, enabling and disrupting historical business practices.  We are swimming in data but bereft of actual insightful information.  We also currently have two separate silos of key performance data – financial data and operating data.  We want to provide common oversight over what is currently two distinct teams in order to bring this data together to create insightful and actionable information – from developing processes to ensure the accurate and timely collection of data to creating KPI’s to track progress.

Applications (Software)

The primary responsibility of this position is to own the internal and external technology stack for the organization with the goal to collect the right data and connect the right pieces to become a model tech platform in sports (not leading edge, but rather fully integrated, intelligent and actionable).

  1. Internal:  Own the procurement, configuration, and coordination of all internal software requirements for the consolidated enterprise, the sales and marketing needs of the team and the operational requirements of the arena.  This includes the existing ERP financial system (Great Plains), HRIS (Workday), inventory and sales management (KORE + Microsoft Dynamics), marketing and communications (Marketo, Percolate), building management (AwareManager), POS, access control + security, etc.

  2. External:  Deliver a consumer-facing digital experience that evolves with market expectations.  Currently, this includes existing team-based mobile application and in-arena fan applications.  As technology and trends evolve, integrate third-party applications into our digital experience – including Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram.  Develop key partnerships in technology community to pilot and showcase Hawks activities.

Network & Infrastructure Management (Hardware)

In order to implement the software solutions above, the baseline IT network and hardware systems and management must be aligned; we do not intend this new role to be involved in the day-to-day, hands-on management of the systems, but rather provide leadership and direction to the current department.  As a result, this position will also oversee and lead the existing three person IT department – primarily tasked with the management of existing network and IT infrastructure.  With $200 million to spend on the renovation of the arena, and the promise of our brand positioning in Atlanta, it is critical that we get this right – includes network, wireless, DAS, IPTV, broadcast technologies and NBA network requirements.
