Director, Business Operations and Strategy - Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena (Atlanta, GA)

Over the past two years, the new ownership and management of the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena have lead a dynamic turnaround of the franchise, on and off the court.  Building on the 60-win season and Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 2015, the Hawks have relaunched the brand, increased sponsorship by 50%, doubled the season-ticket holder base, and set a course for the future with four key initiatives:

  • Build a new practice facility

  • Start a G-League franchise

  • Renovate Phillips Arena

  • Redevelop downtown surrounding Arena

We have made real on each of these four initiatives and are entering a period of significant growth over the next several years.  These initiatives are part of the transformation of the business from simply a steward of the team to an active, acquisitive, operator and owner that will expand the scope of the former Hawks business.  In order to help make this change, we are looking to hire a bright, dynamic, multi-skilled finance, operations and strategy director to work closely with the COO, CIO and team to evaluate, lead, and implement these significant projects and the others that will grow out of this new business strategy.  This role will be the point on identified cross functional teams and projects that result from our business strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Finance
    • Perform survey analysis and ad-hoc financial modeling as required.
    • Provide data analysis and strategic direction for internal customers on functional area/department specific initiatives.
  • Operations
    • Analyze Marketing and Sales campaigns, initiatives and results to measure effectiveness and success.
    • Analyze technology initiative results, effectiveness and success
  • Strategy
    • Work with all key business functions across the entire organization, including marketing, sales, corporate partnerships, suite sales and building bookings/operations, with the ultimate goal of developing improved processes and maximizing return on investment for the organization.

    • Work closely with Ticket Sales and Service, Corporate Partnerships, Marketing, and other departments to create strategies for revenue-generation, improved cost management, and growth.

  • Identify and evaluate opportunities for new revenue through venue enhancements, fan experience and new fan spaces.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors Degree required, MBA strongly preferred.   
  • Minimum of 8 years of related business experience.
  • Strong analytical planning forecasting and budgeting/financial skills, including a high degree of comfort with multi-variable regression modeling and other advanced analytics.
  • Creative mindset with an ability to identify ways to leverage existing assets for new business.
  • Excellent skills in the following areas:  written and verbal communications, analytics, interpersonal, innovative problem-solving, competitive assessment and spreadsheet capability.
  • The ability to manage multiple, complex priorities within demanding timeframes.
  • Excellent communication, persuasion and negotiation skills.
  • Experience in developing presentations and presenting.
  • Preferred professional experience in project based strategic roles, such as strategy/management consulting or project based marketing.
  • Proven ability to manage discrete, time sensitive projects through to completion and maintain a high level of comfort multi-tasking or working with potential ambiguity
  • Three years’ experience with CRM solutions.     
  • Position will require some weekend and/or evening work.

The Atlanta Hawks intend to be a data-driven company – collecting, analyzing and tracking information to make the best decisions about our business.  This newly created role will evaluate a broad range of strategic and financial initiatives that support the business growth strategy.  Primarily responsible for providing fact based data driven guidance to the organization. 

This position will provide quantitative analysis and data driven insights on all aspects of the organizations current, future and potential business initiatives.

This position reports to the Chief Information Officer and will be an integral part of setting overall strategy for the organization and maximizing return on investment for all programs and initiatives by incorporating sound business judgment and analytics.
